Although this game could have existed in various guises, it manages to convincingly incorporate the art of sailing large ships into battle. As they conquer enemies and recover lost treasure, players can upgrade their ships and crew. Dual screen Not the greatest use of the touch screen and whilst the bottom screen initially appears to be just another game map it does actually have a more involved function. The original involved puzzles and multiple hazards, whilst you were fending off other ships, but this incarnation has stripped out all these gameplay elements and produced more of a simple sailing game. It also renders the other selectable ability enhancements such as greater range for your weaponry practically irrelevant due to their comparatively meagre usefulness.
The end-of-level sea monsters are reused, forcing you to fight them over and again, and each stage is a series of corridors to be tackled in a very linear way, with no exploration or choice of route involved. The rather thin plot is laid out between levels in a series of illustrations accompanied with generic pirate prose, but the artwork itself is of decent quality. Cookie-cutter levels, uninspired enemies, and disastrously executed resource management elements leave the one-player game adrift, while the multiplayer mode does not provide the quick and easy thrills required to buoy this particular sinking ship. © , 1999 - 2019. They are generally more than willing to join your crew and enhance your abilities although you will have to fork out some gold, which does seem a little unfair, as their other option is to remain stranded in the middle of the sea.
This is a great game for who. There are rewards for destroying enemy ships along your way, such as gold or new crew members that enhance your ship's abilities, but these appear with insufficient frequency to induce players to destroy a majority of the enemies that appear. Built on strictly functional graphics and controls, Pirates' game design ultimately fails to deliver an experience dynamic or intense enough to maintain interest in its single-player story mode, while its technically-restricted multiplayer mode is a further let-down.
